Glycerin
Manufacturing
Glycerine is a simple polyol compound. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. Glycerine has been found to be used in many applications ranging from manufacturing to food, medicine or personal care and is generally obtained from plant and animal sources where it occurs in triglycerides, esters of glycerol with long-chain carboxylic acids.
Pharmaceuticals
Glycerin is a colorless and odorless viscous liquid. It is water soluble and it is derived from both natural resources (such as animal fats and vegetable oils) and synthetically. It is commonly used in pharmaceuticals, particularly in topical creams, lotions, and ointments to retain moisture. It acts as a solvent in syrups and oral solutions. Glycerin is also used as a mild laxative and can act as a preservative in oral syrups due to its antimicrobial properties.
